Position Overview
Filion Capital is seeking a curious and innovative Data Scientist to embed within our investment team, transforming raw data into a competitive edge. This individual will be responsible for developing predictive models, building proprietary datasets, and generating data-driven insights that directly inform our investment strategy, due diligence process, and portfolio company value creation. This role sits at the intersection of finance and technology, offering a unique opportunity to apply advanced analytics to real-world investing.
The ideal candidate is a problem-solver who can leverage statistical and machine learning techniques to uncover hidden patterns, assess risk, and identify alpha in global markets.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement machine learning models to predict company performance, identify attractive investment targets, and assess market trends.
- Design and construct proprietary datasets by scraping, cleaning, and integrating data from diverse sources, including financial statements, web traffic, satellite imagery, and industry reports.
- Conduct deep-dive analytical projects to support due diligence, answering critical questions on market sizing, customer behavior, competitive positioning, and operational benchmarks.
- Build interactive dashboards and data visualizations to communicate complex findings clearly and effectively to the investment team and senior leadership.
- Collaborate directly with investment professionals to frame business problems as analytical hypotheses and deliver actionable intelligence.
- Stay abreast of the latest techniques in data science, machine learning, and alternative data applications within the investment industry.
- Advise portfolio companies on leveraging their data for strategic decision-making and operational improvement.

Qualifications
- Advanced degree (M.S. or Ph.D.) in Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, Economics, or a highly quantitative field.
- 2-4 years of professional experience applying data science techniques to solve business problems, ideally within finance, consulting, or a technology-driven firm.
- Expert proficiency in Python (Pandas, NumPy, Scikit-learn) and SQL for data manipulation, analysis, and model development. Experience with R is a plus.
- Proven experience with statistical analysis, machine learning, and predictive modeling.
- Experience with data visualization tools such as Tableau, Power BI, or Plotly.
- Strong understanding of data engineering principles and experience working with large, messy, unstructured datasets.
- Exceptional problem-solving and analytical reasoning skills.
- Ability to communicate complex technical concepts and results to a non-technical audience.
- Intellectual curiosity about businesses, markets, and the drivers of company performance.
- Interest in global and emerging markets is a strong plus.
